Uusia talviurheilupaikkoja testailemassa

lace braid, snake braid

Tänä vuonna olemme olleet ihan kotimaassa hiihtolomailemassa.

Aloitimme ajelemalla Jyväskylään, jossa pidin kolme lettikurssia.

Feathered braid

Eli kaiken kaikkiaan kivoja kokemuksia kaikki kolme. Nyt tytöt ovat loppu viikon mummulassa, joten seuraavat yhteiset hiihdot teemme pääsiäisenä vähän pohjoisempana.

IN ENGLISH:

School’s off for this week and we’ve been traveling in central and southern Finland. Above, I wrote a bit in Finnish, comparing different winter sport centres, but if you’re in the US or Australia, that probably doesn’t interest you that much! However, if you’re a non-Finnish speaker living in Finland: I warmly recommend Messilä for snowboarding or down hill skiing and Vierumäki for all kinds of sport from gymnastics to cross country skiing and from swimming to ice-skating.

What probably interests you more are the braids for winter sports:

lace braid, snake braid

I braided the end of this snake braid and it lasted well through 7 hours of skiing: taking the helmet off and putting it back on. It wasn’t perfect looking in the end (as my Snapchat followers saw), but it held the hair out of the way.

Dutch braids for sport

These dutch braids were done in a real rush: zero time spent on partings and two quick photos. Result: very well lasting crooked and uneven braids with a crumby-faced photo!

Feathered braid

The feathered braid was done more for testing how well it lasts. Compared to a waterfall braid, it lasted very well, but for skiing, I’d recommend a lace braid instead. I’ll show you more on the technique of feathering tomorrow on my YouTube.

Let it Glow!

Lauantaina The Glow Party! avaa Skidit Disko-kauden oikein hohdokkaasti. Olen paikalla tekemässä kaikille halukkaille diskokampauksia, joilla kelpaa tanssia Orkidean ja muiden DJ:ten musiikin tahdissa.

glow in the dark hair spray

Postauksen alussa kuitenkin yksi kuva maistiaisiksi lauantain tunnelmasta!

Ja lopuksi: muistakaa käydä vastaamassa lyhyeen blogikyselyyn!

IN ENGLISH:

This Saturday I will be braiding at Skidit Disko. Me and the girls tried to decide what kind of braids would be best for the party and wanted to share some video tutorials for those who’d like to try them at home.

We thought elastic hairstyles would be good as they hold really well and you can add colour with elastics.

First, a quick and easy way to make bubble pigtails.

Another quick and easy style would be the reverse pull-through braid, which you can do in a ponytail.

And once you master those two, you can combine them and add glow in the dark hair spray:

braids

Yritin nimijulkaisua varten saada kaikki kolme tyttöä samaan kuvaan.

When I first started my blog, I thought I would not call my girls by name. Not quite sure why: anyone can take their pictures off the internet and it doesn’t matter if there’s a name or not. At first I never published pictures of their faces (easy, when you’re a braid-blogger), so there was not much point keeping the names secret. I suppose I did it to look better in the eyes of others: I didn’t want to seem like a bad mother who shouts out her kids’ names for anyone to see.

I think it is for all parents to choose for themselves, whether or not to publish their kids’ pictures and names. And I’m sure everyone is right and everyone has her own reasons.

However, I got tired of calling them the big, the small and the middle one, so I published their names on Instagram last week. We are braiding and teaching at courses and events where I always call them by name, and their names have already been published in newspaper and they will be printed in my book as well… So thre’s not much point trying to hide the names anymore.

So here are my girls, Elli, Moona and Lotta:

Eilen letittelin hyvän musiikin tahdissa, jerk-chickenin tuoksussa, ihanassa ilta-auringossa. Jenni’s Hairdays lettikoju nousi tällä kertaa Jamaican itsenäisyyspäivän kunniaksi järjestettyihin bileisiin, meren rantaan. Tässä alkuillan tunnelmaa omien tyttöjeni kanssa:

Jamaican itsenäisyys bileet, Helsinki

[Scroll down for English]

Braids by Jenni' Hairdays

Kun valo loppui, kokosimme lettikojun kasaan ja jatkoimme juhlimista, lapsetkin jaksoivat tanssia lähes puoleenyöhön. Kiitos vielä One Love Helsinki! Oli todella kivat juhlat!!

Just a quick post with pictures of the braids and atmosphere at yesterday’s Jamaican Independence party. Had a great time braiding in the sound of good music, smell of jerk chicken and in the warm evening sun.

My braids are far from the art work of my Caribbean colleagues, so I did my own Finnish style quick-braids. I’m still useless with afro hair, I did have couple of practice goes, but they were not good enough to take a photo!

What a great party! We all had a great time! Thanks so much One Love Helsinki!

Jenni’s Hairdays meets Ice Braids

Matkaa suunnitellessa mieleeni tuli hollantilainen Insta-ystäväni, Tamara @ice_braids.

French fishtail & five strand dutch braid

Tämä oli kyllä todella kiva tapaaminen! Lapset tulivat tosi hyvin toimeen, samoin kuin me aikuiset!

In English (sorry, still really bad wifi connection, so pictures are above)

Me and the girls are on our way to Paris. When I was planning the journey, I thought of my Dutch insta-friend Tamara. We’ve got to know each other through the Instagram braiding community, and we chat on WhatsApp almost every day.

When I realized that Tamara lives almost on our route, I thought we definitely have to meet!

So last Saturday, me and my girls checked in at a campsite near Tam’s home town. And on Sunday we met Tam and her girls.

It was so nice to see how kids need no common language: just sand, water or a playground is enough! We took some hair photos first (above).

Good thing we took the photos straight away as afterwards the girls were rolling in the sand, jumping in water, rolling in the sand again!!

We had lunch together and while the kids were playing, me and Tam braided each other’s hair. Tam did a 5-strand braid to last through camping, and I did a French fishtail (picture above).

It was really great to meet Tam and her girls in real life! Everyone got along really well, so much fun!!

Go and check Ice Braids on Instagram, Facebook and her blog!

Pyörällä Pariisiin

No, ei meidän perheestä pyöräile kuin yksi… Torstaina starttasimme koko perheen voimin Helsingistä kohti Pariisia. Mieheni pyöräilee, minä ja tytöt tulemme autolla. Eikä pyöräily olekaan mikä tahansa pyöräily, vaan mieheni on mukana Rynkeby-tiimissä, johon kuuluu noin sata pyöräilijää Suomesta ja 1350 muista pohjoismaista. Pyöräily Pariisiin on koko vuoden käynnissä olleen hyväntekeväisyyskampanjan huipentuma. Suomen Rynkeby-tiimi kerää varoja Sylvalle – syöpäsairaiden lasten ja nuorten hyväksi.

Pariisiin pyöräily alkoi siis torstaina Helsingin Narinkka-torilta, jossa olimme tyttöjen kanssa Rynkeby-tiimin värisin nauhaletein toivottamassa kaikille onnea matkaan ennen kuin he polkaisivat poliisisaattueessa Vuosaaren satamaan. Matka jatkui yhdessä laivalla Saksan Travemundeen, jossa sitten erkanimme.

Screen Shot 2015-07-06 at 19.07.02

Screen Shot 2015-07-06 at 19.18.44

team rynkeby

Matka jatkuu ja tapaamme jälleen Pariisissa.

In English: (Sorry, the wifi here is so slow that all the pictures are just going to be in the Finnish text above)

On Thursday, our whole family set off from Helsinki to Paris. My husband is doing a charity bike ride all the way there, while me and the girls are driving. The Rynkeby-team of 100 Finnish cyclists and about 1350 more from other Nordic countries have been fundraising all year for charities that help of children and young people with cancer, the Finnish team is collecting money for Sylva.

Team Rynkeby started on Thursday by cycling from central Helsinki to the port. My girls were there, wishing them good luck, wearing ribbon braids with the team’s colors. We were all on the same ferry to Travemunde in Northern Germany, after which I went off camping with the girls, while the Rynkeby team started their journey on bikes.

Now, the riders have been through heat, hail and thunderstorms, and managed an amazing 524km. We met up with them in Germany. My girls have yellow ribbon braids (we couldn’t find the green ribbon in the camping gear, but yellow’s the main color anyway). So nice to meet them all and hear how their journey has gone!

I even got to braid one of the cyclists. So above a braid that will fit under the helmet and keep the hair tight in the heat tomorrow.

The journey continues towards Paris, where we’ll meet again.

Braid to last through an active day

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
puoliranskalais kampausA busy weekend. Today’s braiding challenge was that my daughter was going to a birthday party in a soft play area after which we were planning to go ice-skating. So, she needed a braid that would be fancy enough for the birthday party, but hold well while playing and also to fit under a helmet for ice-skating.
Our solution was this lace braided half-up-braid. This hairdo is so pretty, but also holds all the hair out of the face and out of party food. It also fit under a helmet, and lasted through all of these activities with only a few fly aways!
This braid is easier than what it appears at first. If you can do a lace braid, you need to just look at this picture for a while and you’ll figure it out without a tutorial.
I’ve seen this braid done by many Instagram braiders, but my Brazilian friend Carla Massari did such a beautiful version a while ago that I had to put it on my to-do-list. Go and check Carla’s perfect styles: @mimiamassari .
Braiding marathon – part 2: festival stall
So last Saturday’s story continues at Skidit Festival. After doing all the wedding hairstyles, I rushed to Kallio in Helsinki. Skidit Festarit is a really nice children’ festival with lots of kids’ activities, music, food etc.
festival braiding stallI got the idea for a festival braiding stall last summer when I went to some music festivals and noticed all the boring ponytails… But as I am only a self-taught braider, whose main experience is doing kids’ hair, the kids’ festival was the perfect place to try out how it would work.
It was a hot day (+30 degrees), but luckily I had a tent, so I was in the shade. It took about 15 minutes for the first person to stop for a braid, but after that, it was a constant queue for 5 hours!
two lace braids into a heart braid At first, I had a few little girls, with very thin hair, but I managed at least to do a little lace braid with a ribbon or a quick heart, which looks good on everyone, and is easy to make even when the model is moving a lot.
When the queue started to be quite long, only girls with a lot of hair thought it was worth waiting, so my job got a little bit easier 😉
Some little girls were very specific on what they wanted, many parents wanted something to keep the hair out of the face, some girls chose their favourite colour ribbon, and some gave me free hands… So it didn’t get boring!
waterfall into a french braid
A national news paper’s website had published an interview of me the day before, so some girls had already been on my Instagram or Facebook for ideas.
The most popular style, which I did 6 times, was the corset braid, followed closely by the star braid:
two dutch braids with ribbon star braid
In the end, I did 31 braids in 5 hours. I didn’t even take a break! I remember queueing for face painting with my girls once, and when we got to the face painter, she said she’s going for a break… I couldn’t do that to the little girls (and parents) who had been waiting for their turn! So I just had some quick snacks and water between braids, and carried on!
I was exhausted in the end: my back was aching and I was hot and hungry, but I had really enjoyed it. I didn’t notice the time at all while I was braiding!
I thought it was such a fun experience, that I have already agreed for another event in a week’s time! So everyone, who is near Porvoo, Finland next Saturday, come to Bubbles-event at Taidetehdas! I will be braiding kids as well as adults this time!
braids at Skidit Festarit
PS. as you can see, I used stickers, stamps, crayons etc to keep the little ones occupied while I was braiding.
Braiding marathon – part 1: wedding hair
I braided 35 heads on Saturday! Most of you have probably already heard about this, but I felt like I need to tell you the whole story!
double starburst bun So, I had promised to do 3 bridesmaids’ hair for a friend’s wedding, and one other wedding guest squeezed in the queue as well. We started at 7:30 am! Luckily we had done a trial earlier in the week, so it was a fairly easy job… But of course my hands were shaking a bit, as I’ve never done anything as important as bridesmaid’s styles!
First, my sister got one of my favourites: a double starburst bun. I’ve done this on my sister and my daughter many times, so it was fairly quick to do and we knew it would last well. (She returned from the wedding at 1:30 am, and her hair was still perfect.)
wedding hairAll of the bridesmaids wanted an up-do as it was a very hot day. So next was waterfall braids into french braids into a bun. I can’t normally do waterfall braids that well, so I was very happy with this one!
The third bridesmaid had a picture of three dutch braids she liked, so we did the dutch braids and then made it into an up-do with a braided bun.
wedding hair, bridesmaids hairI was happy with all three. Unfortunately, I was in a rush, so didn’t get a picture of the fourth wedding hairdo that I did!
Next, I had to pack my combs, brushes, hairspray and pins and rush to Skidit – kids’ festival, where my husband was setting up my braiding stall… And that’s where the real challenge of the day was: 5 hours of braiding to follow in the next blog-post…
Memories of the Carribbean
We are finally settling in our new home in Finland. I didn’t have a chance to blog while we were travelling, as I only had my mobile… My Instagram followers have seen more than enough of my ”travel braids” as I posted at least one braid from each country we went to. So now for those, who are not on Instagram: I’ll show you a few favourites from our Carribean trip.
First, we went to Jamaica. It was amazing. We all agree that out of all the countries we went to, Jamaica was our favourite. The people we super nice, food was good, atmosphere, music, weather, the sea… everything.
There were braiders everywhere! And so many amazing braids! When we first got out the plane, my 5-year old said ”mummy, everyone here has much nicer braids than what you make!”… So, I took it as a challenge, and this was the first morning in Jamaica:
Interlocking french braids, french braid feather braid combo
I got so many compliments for this and other braids throughout the 2 weeks in Jamaica, I even got job offers from the local braid-salons! Really felt that my work was appreciated in Jamaica 🙂
Next, we went on a Caribbean cruise visiting six of the Eastern Caribbean Islands. On each island we did a little trip to a beach, did some snorkeling or just relaxed and went swimming. The braids were always destroyed in the end of the day from all the seawater, so perfect excuse to do new braids every day. Here are some of my favourites (snake braid in St. Kitts, rope braid in Antigua and fishtail-french braid in St. Lucia):
Snake braid on a beach in St. Kitts rope lace braid into rope braid ponytail french feather braids into a fishtail braid
After the cruise we went to Mexico, where I’ve always wanted to visit. It was really interesting with all the history, Mayan ruins etc. and of course Mexican food, one of my favourite cuisines!
Again, we swam a lot, so needed to re-do the braids all the time. I was trying to decide which photo to put here, and then found this:
french braid
This braid was done by my husband. He was complaining he never gets any braiding practice anymore, as I always do the hair! So he came up with this braid, which I thought was beautiful!!
But that’s enough from our holiday (I might do another post with a bit more, but if I add it here it will be too long!)… I hope I’m better at blogging regularly now that we finally have a home again!
