Happy Halloween

day of the dead make up

Ihan oikeutetusti useat inhoavat Halloweenia: onhan se taas yksi jenkkijuhla, joka kaupallisista syistä on ujutettu suomalaiseen kalenteriin. Minun blogini kun on tällainen hyvän mielen lettiblogi, taidan skipata tarkemmat pohdinnat siitä, mikä on Halloween, Guy Fawkes ja Day of the Dead.

Perjantaiaamuna heräsimme kuudelta tekemään, ei tälläkertaa hämähäkinseittiä leteistä, vaan Day of the Dead- ja kummitusmeikkejä koulun Halloween-juhlaa varten.

Nämä Day of the Dead meikit on siis taiteiltu ihan aloittelijan käsin!

IN ENGLISH:

Many Finnish people think that Halloween shouldn’t be celebrated here. I guess they’ve got a point: it’s just another American tradition that has been  adapted for commercial reasons. But as my blog is a feel good hair blog, I’m going to leave out the debate about Halloween, Day of the Dead and Guy Fawkes. I’ve lived abroad long enough and celebrated with different nationalities, so I take the liberty to celebrate a mixture of these October/ November festivities, and enjoy it!
It’s been a whole week of preparing and celebrating. You can read my last weekend’s post if you want to see hair ideas and trial make-up.  On Tuesday, Lotta went to kindergarden as a witch (the party was actually on Thursday,  but she convinced me it was Tuesday,  so she went as a witch twice):

Friday we got up at 6 am, not to braid spiderwebs, but to do sugar skull and ghost make-up for the school Halloween party:

I asked the girls what they wanted for their hair… Elli wanted just some loose curls and Moona said she wants it all tied back so that you can’t see it from under her hood.

It was below freezing, so this is what they looked like for the walk to school (there’s also the pumpkin we carved):

But the best part is me and my husband’s Day of the Dead look for tonight’s party. I’m a complete beginner with make up. I can just about put on mascara,  so I was surprised how easy this was. Thanks my friend Sonja and the girl in the fancy dress shop for their tips!

Halloween on mun lempparijuhla.

Kampauksen 14 silikoonirenksua pitävät lyhyet hiukset tiukasti kiinni. Teimme myös kuva ohjeet tähän tyyliin:

Lyhyet hiukset, short hair, halloween   hämähakkiletti, spiderweb

Postauksen alussa näkyvä hämähäkinverkko on viimevuonna kehittelemäni Halloween-kampaus. Tänä vuonna jenkkiläinen netti/letti-ystäväni Jill teki tästä hämähäkin verkkoletistä videotutoriaalin.

Noidan kissa on myöskin aina kiva Halloween-asuvaihtoehto. Ennen olen aina letittänyt korvat, mutta nyt kokeilimme tällaisia sykeröitä, joihin löytyy video-ohje Babes in Hairland blogista. Toimivat myös lyhyellä tukalla! Samalla tekniikalla voisi tehdä vaikka pirun sarvet.

IN ENGLISH

I love Halloween. Even though people don’t really celebrate it in Finland, I think we’ve lived abroad long enough to take it as a family tradition. As always, we started planning Halloween hairstyles well in advance (even before the big haircut). You can find last couple of years’ scary hairstyles here and here. Each year I get carried away a bit, yesterday I tried to make sugar-skull make-up on myself, a trial run for Halloween. Quite happy about how it turned out!

But back to hair… It’s always easy to do big messy witch-hair, but if you want something a bit different, you can add spiders and spiderweb into the witches hairdo. Here’s an easy one, that doesn’t require any braiding skills. We also did the same in short hair, which turned out great (find a pictorial up in the Finnish part of the post)

My last year’s favourite was a bit more complicated spider web with cornrows.

This year my good friend Jill did a tutorial for this braid: Spider web braid.

A black cat is always a good outfit option. I have done braided cat ears quite a few times, but now we tried these folded/twisted cat ears, which worked well on shorter hair. Find a tutorial on Babes in Hairland blog.

Finally, another way to add Halloween-feeling to braids is to add orange, black and green ribbon. You can do it quite easily by doing a 4-strand or 5-strand ribbon braid. I went a bit over the top and tried my first ever 8-strand braid yesterday (find a pictorial in the Hairbraiding basics Instagram)

Some last-minute ideas for tomorrow for those of you who are still trying to think of a Halloween costume. If you have no time to go and shop for a costume, or make one, you can always divert everyone’s attention to your hair.

We tried this spider web braid last weekend, and I think I will be making it again tonight, ready for tomorrow. A great hairstyle to do in advance, as it holds very well.

It’s 5 corn rows with strands of hair pulled through to make a web. I left a bit of hair out at the front side, and used a topsy tail to thread hair through. Then just finished with a plastic spider.

bubble ponytail with spiders for halloweenA bit easier style is a bubble braid with plastic spiders or other Creepy Crawlers attached. In fact, any braid with plastic spiders, sculls or bats will get attention. You can attach them with little elastics or you can use Halloween rings, that you can find in lots of shops this time of year.

Even easier option is witch hair: just a load of teasing, the messier the better. For witch hair, cat ears, a braided spider and a messy bun for a crow, see my last year’s Halloween post.

One of my daughters has asked me to do bat hair like this one on Japanese singer Kyary Pamyu Pamyu… I think I’ll try to think of an easier option.

Halloween hiukset

bubble ponytail with spiders for halloweenVähän helpompi Halloween letti on ”kuplaletti”, tai oikeastaan mikä tahansa letti, johon laitetaan hämähäkkejä tai muita ötököitä kiinni esimerkiksi pikku kumilenkeillä.

Halloween hair

If you’re looking for some scary ideas for Halloween, here’s a great Halloween hairstyle I made today, plus a few from last year…

Spider braid for halloween The spider braid is easy but a bit time-consuming. First, you need to make a half ponytail. Next, with the hair in the half ponytail, make 8 small braids where one of the strands is partly hair, partly pipe cleaner. Then just twist the 8 braids into a ball, leaving enough braid at the end to make the legs. Use some elastics or boppy pins to keep the spider’s body in pace.

After I made this for my middle daughter, my eldest one demanded a bat braid… If you have any ideas of how to make a bat out of hair, please let me know! Might have to wait until next year…

Last year my middle daughter was a witch for Halloween… Witch hair is always easy: just tease the hair into a big mess, and that’s it!

Witch hair for Halloween

My oldest daughter dressed up as a crow. Apart form her blondest of blonds hair, crow hair was also quite easy: I made a messy bun and stuck some black feathers in it:

And last, but not least, last year’s picture of a little black cat. She was under two years old, and had very little hair to work with, but I managed to braid some pipe cleaner into her hair and twist the braids into cat ears:
