Tikapuuletti – ohjevideo

If you have active kids, you know that some hairstyles have no chance of survival: waterfall braid comes undone the minute your child does a summersault or crawls under the sofa.

A week and a half ago I published a tutorial for the waterfall braid, and it’s also a popular one on my braiding courses. It’s great for adults and older kids, but on younger kids you need to modify it to make it last: you can either tie the rest of the hair on a low ponytail or pick up the waterfall pieces and make it into a ladder braid.

Here’s a video tutorial on a ladder braid updo:

If you practice your waterfalls and ladder braids, the possibilities for different hairstyles are endless.

Hair for special occasions / Juhlakampauksia

(Suomeksi alla)

I’ve been asked to do a lot of braids for all kinds of parties from weddings to school reunions. I thought I’d compile some of my favourite hairdos for special occasions.

If you like these and you’re looking for a Christmas present idea for someone near Helsinki, I have gift vouchers for sale in my online shop.

Ladder braid updos look great, and there are a million variations. Here, couple of quick ones from last summer:

Intricate braids take a lot more time, but are beautiful and eye-catching:

Accessories can turn any hairdo a bit fancier. Few days ago I did a normal 4-strand with pearls:

And last but not least, my favourite hairdo, that will work on almost any type of hair: double starburst bun. Here I’ve done it on 1) long & thick hair, 2) mid-length & fairly thin and 3)  short & thin hair. Always looks beautiful.

Finnish hair – not so blond

Olen vihdoin toipunut viime viikonlopun urakasta.

I have finally recovered from last weekend. I did over 100 hairdos in 3 days at the I Love Me fair in Helsinki. I was working with Nordic Beauty Import: promoting my new business and also braiding all those who bought a Tangle Teezer or Invisibobbles.

I really enjoyed working with all types of hair: long, short, thin, thick, and all possible colours. There were loads of different types of hair, really challenging the thin blond Finnish stereotype!

Two hairdos from one

Haven’t posted for a while. We’ve had a lot of visitors and been away skiing…

My sister has been here, so I’ve had a chance to try out braids on her. Her hair is very different texture from my girls’, so it’s good practice for me.

Today I did a waterfall braid on her. Normally I hate waterfalls as I usually only have child models, and waterfalls just fall apart in minutes, so it was good to try it on an adult and see that it actually works.

The braid turned out quite OK, but then we thought it would be nice to make it into an updo, and that turned out even nicer. I just love her hair colour, and this braid really shows it off.

Christmas parties

Been busy with all the December happenings… Here are a few hairstyles we’ve done for various Christmas parties.

First, there was a party where we were going to by car, and it was indoors, so we could do almost anything with the hair.

When I said I’d do any hairstyle they wanted, my middle daughter instantly requested the butterfly braid. For my oldest girl, I did a ladder braid, and my smallest had a braided headband with some curls from the previous braid.

The next party was a bit trickier. The girls were going to do a little song and dance performance with santa hats on. So the hairdo had to look nice even with a hat on… So these chinese ladder braids were quite good for that: they looked nice even when most of the head was under the hat, and were a bit more interesting than normal braids:

This morning was the last of the Christmas events: the Christmas Carols at the school. It was outside, and the girls were going to school first, so potential for messing up any hairdo before the event. It was also cold and wet, so hats on, and no curls… And an early morning, so no time for hair in the morning!

For my 1st grader, I just did some tight french braids last night. For the 4th grader, I found a nice hairdo from @abellasbraids on Instagram: two dutch braid headbands into pigtails and then making mini twists with the hair in the pigtails. This was easy, but a bit time consuming to make, and lasted really well.

The first picture below was taken last night, and the second one this morning after she slept with the braids.

New inspiration

I’ve found a great new inspiration: I follow her on Instagram @abellasbraids. She does amazing hairdos, most of them just my style. I’ve been trying them out with varying success. This one I tried a couple of times on my 4-year-old, but her hair just isn’t thick enough to split the hair strands from a waterfall braid into 3. So finally I succeeded when I did the braid on my eldest daughter:

Waterfall braid into a different kind of ladder braid This one is quite tricky to make: you first need to do a waterfall braid, but only drop a strand to the left at every other stitch.

Next, go onto do a ladder braid, but instead of adding a whole strand from the waterfall braid, add a third of a strand at a time to the lower braid.

(I think I really need to do some tutorials instead of adding links, but I can’t braid and film at the same time…)

Anyway, I thought this was beautiful. And it lasted well. And if you have practiced braiding a bit, and have some patience, it’s really not that difficult to make.

french braid feather braid swirl I have tried a lot of other braids from @abellasbraids. Here is one that went quite wrong. It looks nice enough here, but nothing like what I was trying to do. I challenge you to go on Instagram, and find the hairdo I was trying to copy:

Katie @abellasbraids also has a blog on blogspot and you can find her on youtube, go and check it out. I thought I had tried every braid there is, but she has definitely proved me wrong.
