IN ENGLISH

It was below freezing this morning, so good bye big braids and hello woolly hats!

Now it’s the time for beanie styles. Beanie-braids can be messy on purpose, so that putting your hat on and taking it off, won’t matter, or they can be so tight that your hat can’s mess them up.

Luckily we woke up early, so we had time for fishtails: the prettiest but slowest of the winter-styles. Fishtails are great, because they can be messy on purpose, so you don’t need to worry about the hat.

I started with doing two fishtails, before braiding my other daughter, I had a look at the time and decided to do just one. And finally, the youngest one… well, we left the house with her hair down and I did a super quick style at the kindergarden (far from a fishtail).

Rope braids are a nice and quick beanie-style. And if you prefer the hair to stay neat all day, you can do a French rope braid to hold all the hair from the top of the head. Also tight dutch braids do the same job:

During the hat-season, it’s good to remember all the different types of braids, so you can get some variation in braids that peek under the woolly hat. I collected some old favourites here:

Koska letit eivät lähteneet ihan pään päältä, jäivät ylimmät hiukset suoriksi, joten tein niihin 5-osaisen merenneitoletin, joka piilotti suoremmat osat (yksinkertaisempikin half-up kampaus toimii samoin):

ropetwist and 5-strand mermaid braid

Kun kiharoita tehdään leteillä, jäävät ylähiukset usein suoriksi. Siksi kannattaa kokeilla käärmelettiä, jolla saa tasaisemmat kiharat.

I don’t like to use heat in my girls’ hair, but luckily there are so many ways of doing heatless curls. We’ve tried quite a few, here I show you couple of no-heat braided styles to achieve curls.

Saturday night, we I did two french rope twists with wet hair, left them until Monday morning, and you can see the result below. Obviously, when the braid doesn’t start from the top of the head, the top part of the hair is quite straight, so I did a 5-strand mermaid braid to hide the straight bits… but any half-up-do would work here.

ropetwist and 5-strand mermaid braid

If you want to avoid the straight parts at the top, I’d use a snake braid. Last summer, we took the snake braid curls to the next level by making these curls with two zigzag dutch snake braids:

Finally, when doing home made curls, always remember to check the weather forecast: the curls will be ruined by rain!

As a kid, I always wondered why the rope braids that I did on my Barbie, always came undone so easily. A couple of years ago I learned a trick to keep the rope twist tight. Why didn’t anyone tell me before?

In this week’s video tutorial, I show how you need to twist the sections of the rope twist around themselves as well as around each other to keep it tight. There are lots of styles you can do with a rope twist. Here, I show you how to do a lace rope twist into a rope twist ponytail.

You can make an easier version by just doing the ponytail part of the twist, or for variation, you can do the lace rope twist and combine with another style.

Here, I combined two rope twists with French braids (style inspired by Chelsea @sheerbraidedbliss):

I’d love to hear what you think about this style, or my video, so please comment here or on Youtube!

If you recreate this, please tag me on Facebook or Instagram, or use #JHDRopeBraid , so I can see your versions!

Hiihtolomaletit

In English:

During our skiing holiday we tested different styles that fit under the skiing helmet. Above are before and after pictures of a few well-lasting braids on my daughters.

There are also some pictures of different microbraids and lace braids into a braid at the back, including a laced fishtail braid on my sister. These proved to be a good idea as they held the hair from the face, but still fit under the helmet.

Some of the styles above lasted the whole day of skiing. Some I had to make the night before (to save precious morning minutes), so they lasted over night AND the day of skiing.

For simpler braids to fit under the hat or helmet, look in my previous post for basic french braids and dutch braids.

Memories of the Carribbean

We are finally settling in our new home in Finland. I didn’t have a chance to blog while we were travelling, as I only had my mobile… My Instagram followers have seen more than enough of my ”travel braids” as I posted at least one braid from each country we went to. So now for those, who are not on Instagram: I’ll show you a few favourites from our Carribean trip.

First, we went to Jamaica. It was amazing. We all agree that out of all the countries we went to, Jamaica was our favourite. The people we super nice, food was good, atmosphere, music, weather, the sea… everything.

There were braiders everywhere! And so many amazing braids! When we first got out the plane, my 5-year old said ”mummy, everyone here has much nicer braids than what you make!”… So, I took it as a challenge, and this was the first morning in Jamaica:

Interlocking french braids, french braid feather braid combo

I got so many compliments for this and other braids throughout the 2 weeks in Jamaica, I even got job offers from the local braid-salons! Really felt that my work was appreciated in Jamaica 🙂

Next, we went on a Caribbean cruise visiting six of the Eastern Caribbean Islands. On each island we did a little trip to a beach, did some snorkeling or just relaxed and went swimming. The braids were always destroyed in the end of the day from all the seawater, so perfect excuse to do new braids every day. Here are some of my favourites (snake braid in St. Kitts, rope braid in Antigua and fishtail-french braid in St. Lucia):

After the cruise we went to Mexico, where I’ve always wanted to visit. It was really interesting with all the history, Mayan ruins etc. and of course Mexican food, one of my favourite cuisines!

Again, we swam a lot, so needed to re-do the braids all the time. I was trying to decide which photo to put here, and then found this:

This braid was done by my husband. He was complaining he never gets any braiding practice anymore, as I always do the hair! So he came up with this braid, which I thought was beautiful!!

But that’s enough from our holiday (I might do another post with a bit more, but if I add it here it will be too long!)… I hope I’m better at blogging regularly now that we finally have a home again!
