Flower girls

Flower girlsAdvice to all brides, mums of little flower girls, and others who will be styling the flower girls’ hair this summer: don’t try any fancy hairdos or amazing braids!

First, the flower girls will be playing, jumping or running around while waiting for the ceremony, so the hairdo might not even last to the church isle. Even if it does, they will next be sitting in the ceremony, rubbing their head against the seat, nervously pulling their hair or bored and playing with the hair. And if the hairdo lasts the ceremony, next, the flower girls will be playing, jumping and running around again, followed by crawling under tables, dancing etc… And all this time there will be people taking photos from all directions!

Here are a few tips for lovely flower girl hair:

Hair down looks nicer than tight french braids (and looks nice from all directions) but hair on the face is a problem… so pretty headbands and hair clips is all you need!

If you really want to braid the hair, one of the braided headbands (french braid, lace braid, or other) would probably work well.

Curling the hair is risky if the weather forecast is at all iffy, rain will ruin all home-made curls.

Two of my girls were flower girls in a wedding a few summers ago. It was raining a lot before the wedding, so we knew not to try any curls. The bride had got the girls some lovely headbands to wear… the smaller one (almost 2 years old back then) snapped the headband in half when we were getting dressed! Luckily I was prepared, and had a handbag full of pretty hair clips. This worked really well.

So, my advice would be to have some nice headbands or other accessories for bigger flower girls (4 years and over), and pretty hair clips for the smaller ones. And in your handbag: a hair brush and about 10-15 extra hair clips to replace all the ones that get pulled out or lost.

Towards the end of the evening the hair looked like this:

To be fair, my younger daughter’s hairdo had been re-touched about million times… But with the extra hair clips and the brush in my hand bag I managed to make even my older girls hair look nice again. And as we had not tried any fancy braids, there were no odd-looking curls from undone braids to deal with…

So, to sum up: simple, hair down, some hair accessories, and LOTS OF extra hair clips!
