Kiinalainen porrasletti

Chinese staircase braid

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In English:
Back in February, I was braiding in an event, where one of the first customers sat down and said: ”do you know how to do a Chinese Staircase?” I was quite surprised as normally, my customers in braiding events say something like ”You can choose” or ”an updo”, ”something that lasts till tomorrow” or ”I’m going out, so something a bit fancy”, but this girl knew exactly what she wanted. And of course, she got her Chinese Staircase.
The event stuck in my mind as it made me realise there are lots of young braid-experts out there. That night I wrote in my braid-notebook, that I should do a tutorial on the braid. However, my notebook is full of messy notes, braid ideas, lists and drawings, so the note was lost in it, and it took this long until I finally published a tutorial on the Chinese Staircase braid (sorry about my daughter making faces in the beginning!) : Chinese Staircase.
This is worth a try as it is quite easy. The only difficulty is that you get hair sticking out of the braid quite easily, but you can fix that either by wetting the hair while braiding or using hair gel. After a few tries, it is also quite easy to hide the fly-aways inside the braid.
These ones I did last summer by starting with knots around the face:
Ohjevideoita kaikentasoisille letittäjille
Nyt on ollut niin kiirettä lettikurssien järjestelyn kanssa, että olen ihan unohtanut laittaa juttua viimeisimmästä ohjevideostani.
Niille siis, jotka eivät ole vielä päässeet lettikurssille: käykää katsomassa ohjevideoitani YouTubesta. Sieltä löytyy sopiva sekoitus helppoja ja vaikeita lettejä.
[Scroll down for ENGLISH]
Aloittelijalle suosittelisin kalanruotoa, kuplalettiä, köysilettiä ja renksulettiä, niitten lisäksi löytyy siis myös uusia ideoita kokeneemmille letittäjille.
Tällä viikolla julkaisin kolmoisranskalaisen ohjeen:
Letti koostuu kahdesta putousletistä, jotka yhdistetään ranskalaisella keskelle. Tämä vaatii jo vähän enemmän letityskokemusta, mutta onnistuu kyllä kun malttaa kokeilla muutaman kerran!
french braid waterfall combo
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I’ve been so busy organizing braiding courses that I’ve completely forgotten to write here about my latest Youtube video.

So for those, who can’t make it to the braiding courses: I’ve got lots of videos both for beginners and more advanced. For beginners, I’d recommend the fishtail, bubble braid, rope twist or pull through braid, and for more experienced braiders, there are lots of new ideas.

This weeks’ tutorial is for a French braid combo:

The braid is a combination of two waterfall braids which are joined together into a French braid. You need some practice for this one, but after a few tries, it will get easier.

Superkestävä renksuletti (video!)

Monia kampauksia kutsutaan leteiksi, vaikkei niitä letitetäkään. Tämä hiusrenksuilla tehty kampaus on tehty pienistä poninhännistä. Tämä “letti” on todella kestävä, koska siinä on paljon hiusrenksuja, eivätkä hiukset pääse karkaamaan.

Renksuletti pull-through braid

Renksuletistä löytyy ohjevideoita YouTubesta nimellä pull-through braid, koska moni letittäjä tekee tämän tekniikalla, jossa ponnareita vedetään toistensa läpi.

[Scroll down for ENGLISH]

3 strand pull through braid, 3-osainen läpivetoletti

IN ENGLISH:

Many hairstyles are called braids even though they are not braided. This one is made out of many little ponytails. This “braid” is extremely durable because of all the elastics: it holds all the hair really well for a couple of days

Renksuletti pull-through braid

You can find youtube tutorials for the pull-through braid, which gets its name from the technique of pulling little ponytails through each other. I use a slightly different technique, and made a tutorial of my own:

You can do a simpler version of this by making it in a ponytail or you can make it more detailed by adding more elastics. My friend Shelley came up with a 3D-version of the pull-through braid (you can find a pictorial on her Instagram @prettylittlebraids)

tikapuuletti ja puoliranskalainen

Tikapuuletti – ohjevideo

[Scroll down for ENGLISH]

IN ENGLISH:

If you have active kids, you know that some hairstyles have no chance of survival: waterfall braid comes undone the minute your child does a summersault or crawls under the sofa.

A week and a half ago I published a tutorial for the waterfall braid, and it’s also a popular one on my braiding courses. It’s great for adults and older kids, but on younger kids you need to modify it to make it last: you can either tie the rest of the hair on a low ponytail or pick up the waterfall pieces and make it into a ladder braid.

Here’s a video tutorial on a ladder braid updo:

If you practice your waterfalls and ladder braids, the possibilities for different hairstyles are endless.

Here’s a waterfall braid and a version we did for school:

Uusi YouTube video joka viikko

(scroll down for English)

Julkaisin juuri ensimmäisen suomenkielisen YouTube videoni! Jee!

siksak puoliranskalainen sigsag lace braid

I just published my first proper braid tutorial (and I only got my left and right mixed up once)! I have some older tutorials on my channel already, but the new one has a completely new look – shot and edited by Veli Creative. Go and have a look, like, comment, or subscribe to my channel.

I will be publishing a new tutorial every week, both in English and Finnish. I will include different levels: this week is a quick and easy snake braid, next week I’ll do a more advanced style.

The snake braid is quick because you don’t need to do partings and it’s not symmetric, so you can just go ahead and do it without too much fuzz. It suits all ages as well: the tutorial shows it on my 4-year-old daughter, but I also did the same braid on my sister today.

Pictorials, pictorials

While the older sisters have been in school this week, my 3-year-old has been my hair model, and we’ve done some pictorials for you!

I’ve been asked so many times for tutorials on hairstyles! I decided to do step-by-step instructions on the two most popular hairstyles from my festival braiding: the star braid and the corset braid. (These two pictures are my two older girls)

star braid two dutch braids with ribbon

In both of my festival braiding gigs this summer (I did another one last Saturday), I’ve had lots of printouts of different braids, but these two always catch the eye of my little customers, so I could probably do these in my sleep now.

THE STAR BRAIDPicture tutorial. Step-by-step pictures of how to do a braided star

. Start by making a little ponytail on top of the head

2. Divide the ponytail into two sections, then make two basic 3-strand braids

3. Do another little ponytail on the left, divide it into two and make two 3-strand braids

4. Take one of the braids from the left and some hair from the right, and combine them into a small ponytail on the right

5. Make a 3-strand braid with the hair in the right-ponytail

6. Take half of the rest of the hair, left one of the braids from step 2 and the braid from the right

7. Secure with an elastic and remove all other elastics (the dark ones in the picture)

8. Tie all the rest of the hair and small braids into the right and remove extra elastics.

THE CORSET BRAIDIMG_1146

. Divide the hair into two

2-3. Do a 3-strand dutch braid on the right.

4. Do a 3-strand dutch braid on the left.

5. Thread a ribbon through one of the top stitches of the dutch braid. The easiest way is to use a topsy-tail, but you can also use your fingers or a bobby pin or something else

6. Thread the ribbon through the other side and back to the same side, going through every other stitch of the braid

7. Keep going from side to side as threading a shoe lace

8. Tie the two braids together and finish by tying a bow.

These two hairstyles are perfect for any beginner, they look much harder than they are, and always get lots of compliments.

I will be braiding again at Lasten Festarit Festival in Töölönlahti, Helsinki on Sunday  17.8.  at 10-15h.
